Winter Is the Smart Season for Inside Jobs

Exterior work shuts down when the cold sets in — but painting, drywall and bathroom projects don't care about the weather. Why booking your inside jobs for winter gets them done faster, and sometimes cheaper.

There's a cutoff date for exterior work in New Brunswick, and it's set by chemistry, not the calendar. Standard exterior paint needs the air and the surface above about 10°C, staying above the dew point while it cures. Concrete wants several days above freezing. Roofing seal strips need sun warmth to bond. In Moncton, those windows close in late October — and anything exterior that didn't get done moves to April.

Inside jobs play by different rules. And that's exactly why winter is the best time to book them.

The jobs that don't care about the weather

  • Interior painting. Walls, trim, doors and ceilings. Winter air in a heated house is actually dry, which paint likes. The one rule: ventilate the room and let each coat dry properly.
  • Drywall and patching. The crack you've been ignoring, the ceiling stain from last winter's leak (leak fixed first, always), the basement you're finally finishing.
  • Bathroom work. Fans, toilets, vanities, re-caulking, tile repair. The bathroom fan matters more in winter, when the house is sealed tight and shower moisture has nowhere to go.
  • Doors, trim and flooring repairs. The sticking door, the baseboards the dog redecorated, the squeaky stair tread.

Why winter booking works in your favour

Every contractor in Moncton runs the same calendar: slammed from May to October, quieter from December to March. Interior work booked for winter usually gets scheduled faster, with more choice of dates — and you get your house back in shape before spring, instead of joining the April queue behind everyone else's winter damage.

There's a deadline angle too: if you're hosting family over the holidays, a guest-room repaint or a second-bathroom fix booked in November beats a panic call in mid-December. Small fixes go fastest — a single visit on an hourly rate can clear a whole list of them while the crew is already in the house.

💡 One honest exception

Anything that opens the building envelope — window replacements, exterior doors in deep cold, roof work — is still worth doing if it's failing, but it's planned differently in January than in June. When in doubt, ask for the quote now and schedule the work for the season that suits the job. The quote costs nothing; guessing wrong about timing can.
